To create innovation, we need entrepreneurship, but why is it so hard to become entrepreneurial? We dissect in this piece.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\r\n

I\u2019ve always been an entrepreneur. Somehow I can\u2019t help it. Wherever I go, I see opportunities. Any problem that arises looks like something to build a company around. Lately, I\u2019ve started helping larger enterprises on their journey to innovation. To create innovation, we need entrepreneurship<\/a>. And that\u2019s hard to find, especially in enterprises.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

I\u2019m always trying to simplify things. And to bring complex problems down to 1 or 2 things. There\u2019s 1 big blocker to entrepreneurship <\/a>in large companies: job specialization. If anybody asks me what I\u2019m doing as an entrepreneur, I reply: (a bit of) everything. Starting and building a company means doing stuff that others don\u2019t want to do. It means:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

> doing stuff you hate doing (like creating financial spreadsheets and working on contracts so you don\u2019t get screwed over);\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

> Always looking what\u2019s not working and then fixing it;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

> Finding out how to hire (and fire) people<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

> Finding clients (quite important!)<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

> Serving clients\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

> Fixing unhappy clients<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

> Deciding what to focus on<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

> Creating product roadmaps<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

> and on and on and on<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

You can hire people for all of these things, so you don\u2019t need to do it. Problem is; if they don\u2019t do it, you must. If you don\u2019t, who will?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Now most people like to specialize. I am a php programmer and I build websites. I do administration and work in the finance department. I am a digital marketeer and like spreading things in social media.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

There\u2019s a beginning and an end to what a specialist does. As an entrepreneur there isn\u2019t. You just need to do what needs doing. If you don\u2019t, your company (or you) gets stuck.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

As an employee and specialist, you can focus on specific things. If you\u2019re not hired to do something, you just leave it (even if you know it needs doing, but it\u2019s not what you are paid for).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

If you don\u2019t like your job, you can quit and go elsewhere. As an entrepreneur, you become entangled in responsibilities. You need to take care of the people you hired. You can\u2019t just let your clients down. You\u2019re in it deeply and you can\u2019t just quit. There\u2019s also that voice that keeps saying \u2018you must succeed\u2019, so you keep going. Persist.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Don\u2019t get me wrong: I love being an entrepreneur. Doing 1 thing over and over would bore me to death. The challenge is to identify the above behavior of an entrepreneur in a large company. Those are the people who\u2019ll build innovation. Those are the people who\u2019ll make your innovation program work out. They are your change agents. They are the guys who\u2019ll launch that new killer product.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
