You\u2019ve read the <a href=\"https:\/\/ekipa.co\/en-my\/insights\/blogs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">agile books<\/a>, attended <a href=\"https:\/\/ekipa.co\/en-my\/services\/training\/\">trainings<\/a> and conferences, and even paid visit to your local agile shop. You\u2019ve never felt so ready in your life. You&#8217;re ready to introduce agile!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now it\u2019s time to present your ideas to your company and you booked a meeting slot with the bosses. What could go wrong, right?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You start the meeting only to be greeted by endless stream of comments and concerns between the participants that distracts everyone further from the idea. You finish the meeting with no real progress on the matter and you\u2019re left wondering, \u201cwhat happened in there?\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sounds familiar?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We totally get how you feel, so here are <strong>6 great tips to help you introduce agile to your company:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Go with the Winners<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While it may be tempting to invite every decision makers and experts to the meeting, please don\u2019t. At least not yet. Although they\u2019re the ones calling the shots, let\u2019s hold off first.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, look for winners.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Winners are people who\u2019s been known to push the company forward. Are they known for challenging old processes to make room for better ones? Have they ever championed positive changes to improve people\u2019s wellbeing? If the answer is yes, put them on the invite list. Otherwise, save them for later.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having a small number of people with the right attitude and mindset is way more productive than having a room-full of decision makers who will need extra effort to convince. Plus, less people means you\u2019ll have more personalised interactions with everyone with less distractions.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aim to have around 3 &#8211; 6 names on your list and you\u2019re ready for the next step.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Know Your Gold<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before your meeting, grab a piece of paper and write clear outcomes of the meeting. Steer clear from anything too complex or technical. There are tons of contents online that explains low-level <strong>agile details<\/strong> and you can direct them to those materials later.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, keep it simple and make it a session where you share your favourite part <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agilealliance.org\/agile101\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>about agile<\/strong>.<\/a> Instead of just sharing what the books and articles tell you, also make sure to share your opinion. <strong>What attracts you the most about agile?<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Genuine opinions are usually more well-received than plain quotes and numbers. If you have more HR people as audience, try highlighting parts of agile that improve people\u2019s wellbeing, which in turn will produce better work environments and products. These can be illustrated through the collaborative <strong>nature of agile where success is measured through team\u2019s achievements, instead of individual\u2019s<\/strong>. If you have more business and technical people, share stories about how agile\u2019s iterative nature make it ideal to respond to market changes and ultimately deliver relevant products that bring value.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No matter what, you need to treat these planned outcomes as gold. They\u2019re the things you want to achieve, and knowing what they look like beforehand gives you valuable direction.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you have these outcomes in mind, it\u2019s time to step into the meeting.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. Walk Away with the Gold<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Armed with your planned outcomes, now it\u2019s time for the meeting. Keep in mind that most of your meeting participants probably haven\u2019t heard of agile and naturally they would have many questions and comments.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While exploring different topics can be good, you need to filter out the noise. In a productive meeting where people actively participates, you\u2019ll find your conversations getting pulled in many directions. Always keep an ear out for when this happens, and bring it back on track towards your planned outcome.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As meeting facilitator, you have the power to keep the conversation on track by having a firm yet collaborative approach. This way you can be sure to walk away with your gold at the end of your meeting.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>4. Seeing is Believing<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s no secret that what we see plays a big part on our decision-making process, whether we realise it or not. We choose shampoos by their colours, cereals by their box designs, we judge a book by it\u2019s cover.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It only makes sense that we also project our ideas visually to our audience. Coupled with the right narratives, the visuals we bring into meetings can greatly increase the chances of getting our message across.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you plan to use presentation slides, stay away from dumping long-winded text on to the screen. This is normally where you lose people\u2019s interests. Instead, use coloured markers, caricatures, charts, smileys, even animations or videos. You\u2019d be surprised at how quickly people become more attentive once you do this.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>5. Analogies Will get You Places<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They say one good analogy is worth three hours discussion. That means for that 1-hour meeting you only need to prepare a third of a full analogy.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s a lame joke but you get my point.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Analogies are so powerful that you should always use it to explain your ideas. With the overwhelming amount of buzzwords nowadays, it clearly pays to present your ideas using simple stories that everyone is familiar with and can relate to.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of my go-to analogy would be of elephants. Elephants are big and powerful, but they\u2019re slow. The same thing applies to companies. The bigger they get, the slower they become in responding to threats\/changes because of their size. Agile is built on the premise where we know the only constant in life is change. So we plan and deliver products in smaller chunks, iteratively. This way we can deliver products that are relevant to current situations, faster.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can only get your message across when people understand you. So be prepared to throw a few good analogies in your meeting. The simpler the better.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>6. Call in for Backup<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This goes without saying, but calling outside experts to introduce ideas into your company can bring huge impact. Aside from having relevant knowledge on the subject, your company can gain valuable insights on <a href=\"https:\/\/ekipa.co\/en-my\/services\/training\/\">agile practices<\/a> in the industry and see how it could fit your company.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"\/en-my\/about-us\/our-team\/\">good agile expert<\/a> loves to share their knowledge. They know building an agile culture takes time and consistency, so they\u2019d be more than happy to work with you to come up with suitable plan to help your company go agile.
